Biohealth industry M.S. and Ph.D. — Biohealth Industry Management, Yonsei University Graduate School of Transdisciplinary Health Sciences

Researching the healthcare industry through management and strategy

The biohealth industry refers collectively to industries that make products and services for health and medical care, such as pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and digital health. It largely overlaps with what is often called the healthcare industry.

Technology may seem to lead in this industry, but technology alone does not secure a place in the market. Outcomes depend on strategy, on how organizations make decisions, and on whether institutions support them.

The Biohealth Industry Management program at the Yonsei University Graduate School of Transdisciplinary Health Sciences studies these questions.

Full-time study and support

This is a full-time daytime program offering M.S., Ph.D., and integrated M.S.–Ph.D. tracks.

Scholarships and living stipends are available, and students are given their own research space in the lab. For students who want it, we also help look for internship opportunities at related institutions and companies.

Graduates go on to universities and research institutes, as well as to industry.

Research in the lab

The lab studies broadly how healthcare institutions and companies set strategy and perform, and how the industry works. It covers three main areas.

  • Biohealth Industry: strategy and innovation of pharmaceutical, medical device, and digital health companies and industries
  • Healthcare Management: organization and performance of healthcare institutions such as hospitals
  • Digital Health: how technologies such as medical AI and wearable devices are adopted and actually used in hospitals and care settings

Past work has covered topics such as the structure of the medical device industry, hospital resource allocation and patient experience, and the real-world effects of digital health services. Each student's research topic is set together, based on their interests and experience.

Methods are chosen by topic from statistical, network, and text analysis, with machine learning where needed. Students learn these methods through coursework and lab work.

Advisor

The advisor, Munjae Lee, studies healthcare management and the biohealth industry, and was named among the Stanford/Elsevier World's Top 2% Scientists in 2025 and 2026, including the career-long list in 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Can I study while working?

The program is full-time by default. For the Ph.D., combining study with work may be possible in some cases, so please get in touch. For a master's degree while working, see the evening program in the Department of Healthcare Management.

What majors do students come from?

Social sciences such as business and economics, health fields such as public health, nursing, and pharmacy, and engineering and statistics. The problem you want to solve matters more than your major.

Do I need statistics or programming skills beforehand?

No. You will learn the methods you need through coursework and lab work.

How does the living stipend work?

Details are provided during consultation.

Can I consult before applying?

Yes, by email. A brief note on the research topics you are interested in helps.
